Assisted Living Home vs. Assisted Living Center in Arizona: What's the Difference?

Arizona uses two terms that sound similar but mean something very specific.

An Assisted Living Home provides resident rooms to 10 or fewer residents. An Assisted Living Center provides resident rooms or residential units to 11 or more residents.

That distinction is based primarily on size, not automatically on the quality or level of care.

What do both provide?

Arizona defines an assisted living facility as a residential care setting that provides or arranges one or more levels of care on a continuous basis:

  • Supervisory care
  • Personal care
  • Directed care

A small home may therefore provide substantial assistance, while a large center may serve residents with a range of needs.

Does bigger mean more medical care?

Not necessarily. A building with 100 residents is not automatically providing a higher level of care than a 10-resident home. What matters more is:

  • What level of care the facility is licensed to provide
  • What services it actually offers
  • Whether those services match the resident's needs
  • Staffing and training
  • The facility's inspection and enforcement history

Why might a family choose one over the other?

A smaller assisted living home may offer:

  • Fewer residents
  • A more residential setting
  • Potentially more familiarity among residents and caregivers

A larger assisted living center may offer:

  • More amenities
  • Larger common spaces
  • More activities
  • A broader range of staffing or service options

Neither model is automatically better.

Pip's Tip

Don't ask only “Is this a home or a center?” Ask “What level of care are you licensed to provide, and can you continue caring for my family member if their needs increase?” That question tells you far more.

Questions to Ask

  • What level of care are you licensed to provide?
  • Can you continue caring for my family member if their needs increase?
  • How many residents share staff during a typical shift?
  • What does the facility's inspection and enforcement history look like?
